Black Friday: Debit card 'don'ts'

Even though the most recent consumer credit reports show credit card debt is declining, consumer's debit cards are getting quite a workout. Debit card transactions recently surpassed credit card transactions for the first time ever.

Today, President Obama is expected to sign new legislation that will place limits on the fees and interest rates charged to consumers using credit cards (see WSJ article).

Find what people are googling more: American Express, Credit Card, Mastercard, Visa. A different way to look at which credit card company and stock may do the best.

To prepare for the worst, we should picture an unemployed scenario and get serious about bulking up our emergency fund to meet at least six to eight months of expenses. However, remember that there could be more months of job losses ahead before the economy emerge from its languidity.

Ah…yes, the mighty credit card. I still remember being that teenage kid when I first received one in the mail – what a joyful day that was. Told myself, “I’m worth ten thousand dollars now”!

The writing is on the wall. Last week American Express was offering $300 to pay off credit cards. Don’t you think other credit card companies will follow suit. When and if credit card companies start contracting credit lines it is obvious consumer spending will fall even further thus hurting the U.S. economy. The next Dominoe is ready to fall.
