In a year when Europe's sovereign debt woes dominated headlines, it's no surprise that financial stocks took a beating.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index ($INX) is up year to date, but not all of its members have fared as well. Among the benchmark's biggest losers as of Nov. 30 were struggling commodities companies, an unloved chip-maker and also-ran retailers.
