Driverless cars are no longer science fiction — they're reality.

California became the second state (the first was Nevada) to approve autonomous, self-driving cars on the road. Jerry Brown, governor of California, signed the bill at Google's (GOOG) headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., on Tuesday.

April's auto sales, combined with the ISM report on manufacturing and data on construction spending, should help allay some of the concern over growth slowing in the second quarter.

It seems that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), the search engine giant is tired of its dominance over the internet, that it has started making inroads in to the auto industry.

The Fitch Ratings agency lifted Ford's credit rating from junk status to investment grade Tuesday, a sign that the company's recovery from near collapse is almost complete.

But Ford Motor Co. needs another agency, either Standard & Poor's or Moody's, to make the same upgrade before it can get its blue oval logo, factories and other assets out of hock.

The Current Account Balance measures the flow of goods and services, income, and transfer of payments going into and out of the United States. In short, the Current Account Balance shows the difference between a country's investments and savings.

It can only be good news for a city that is seen as a decrepit joke across America, but auto sales are growing so fast for the Big Three in Detroit that Ford (NYSE: F), General Motors (NYSE: GM) and Chrysler are facing a battle to keep up with demand.

Chrysler Continues the Detroit Resurgence

Wednesday saw Chrysler report its first annual profit in seven years. Not since 2005 has the company, the only non-traded auto manufacturer in the Detroit “big 3”, been able to report a profit, and it comes only two years after a federal bailout, a bankruptcy filing and a takeover by Fiat.

Toyota (NYSE: TM) announced today that it would cut its 2011 profit forecast by 54% as floods in Thailand affected its supply chain and the company estimated that production would fall by 230,000 vehicles due to the shortfall.
