The streak is over, but is the trend intact?

A six-week string of gains in the S&P 500 (^GSPC) ended on Friday amid shifting expectations for central bank stimulus. This week could bring clarity on that issue, and that could determine whether the recent rally that took the index to four-year highs will persist.

The SPX: What I'm Watching

Figure 1 shows the cash S&P, normalised volume. Notice that since Monday's break, the volume has picked up as the market headed lower BUT the range has been decreasing even though the bars of Monday and Tuesday showed control by the bears. In addition the volume on Monday and Tuesday was below normal.

US Markets began the morning session slightly higher as indicator releases from India and China showed expansion in manufacturing which sent equity markets racing high.

Wall Street is rallying today, led by strong first-quarter results from JPMorgan, Coca-Cola and Intel that all topped projections. This is a wild reversal from last weeks earnings reports, giving the market a 150+ bps increase in afternoon trading.

Somebody is obviously wrong. You can’t have demand and prices soaring at the same time that a global recession is taking place. Our solution is to follow the money — and bet on commodities. We think the next tidal wave of wealth pouring into commodities could be a real doozy.
