June Unemployment Unchanged at 8.2%

Hiring was lukewarm last month, with employers adding jobs but not enough to bring the unemployment rate down.

The economy added 80,000 jobs in June, the Labor Department reported Friday, barely an improvement from the 77,000 jobs added in May. The unemployment rate remained at 8.2%.

In a recent column, I gushed enthusiastically about the stock market as if it was on a one-way trip higher. It's an old truism that such predictions are usually the sign of a top, and it looks like this time the joke was on me. Regardless of what stocks do now, I was too positive at the time.
