Earnings Season Option Strategies

Posted by optionmaestro on October 21st, 2009

In my blog post Monday I listed a few stocks which I would be willing to go long by selling the puts right before the stock reported earnings. If you missed it you can view the details here. As indicated I took positions on Apple (AAPL), Caterpillar (CAT), Texas Instruments (TXN), SanDisk (SNDK), Walter Energy (WLT), and Yahoo!

Do you feel that you've missed out on a stock that has moved up greatly in this market?

The answers are quite mixed when it comes to the question are we overbought?

Microsoft Corp. appears to have finally locked up rival Yahoo Inc. in a long-awaited Internet search partnership aimed at narrowing Google Inc.'s commanding lead in the most lucrative piece of the online advertising market.

The answers are quite mixed when it comes to the question are we overbought? I am leaning more toward the financial markets being overbought at this point. The index which is up the most and in my opinion will suffer the greatest from a market pull back is the NASDAQ. The chart below shows the NASDAQ, S&P 500, and Dow Jones Industrial Average over the past 3 months.

On the back of a MONSTER week for the stock market, the question may be - Can this rally hold? I like everyone else can't answer this question, but I do know that there are ways to protect a stock without selling it and/or spending money on put options. Simply sell call options on the stock to generate income (which lowers cost basis per share), for the closest option expiration.

In this post I am sharing why I never set market orders and rarely set limit orders when purchasing stocks/ETF's. To understand this post you'll need somewhat of a background in stock options.

With the July options expiration coming to an end this Friday, I decided it's time to look ahead for to the August options expiration. I will be analyzing 15 popular technology stocks and seeing which stock offers the best mix of both return (assuming the stock will be called out at the August expiration) and downside "ProTECHtion", I will then decide which stock is the "best bang for your buck".

Your average user utilizes Twitter as a posting mechanism. Due to the post-election political unrest taking place in Iran we have been exposed to the true power of Twitter.
