Blockbuster Is Flat Broke

Blockbuster (BBI) shares ended the day at 22 cents per share and trading was halted today. The shares dropped over 77% today amid news that the company is consulting with advisers about raising capital and restructuring massive debt obligations. Blockbuster is saddled with debt due to the spin off from Viacom. I have believed for awhile now that the company is headed for bankruptcy.

Netflix can celebrate its 10 millionth subscriber today, which just goes to show that the company has stuck a nerve with its rental by mail strategy. However, it is the company's recent strides towards streaming video rentals that is most exciting for the future of the company.

Netflix shares have been taking a beating this morning after returning some pretty positive earnings news. On Monday, Netflix reported a first-quarter profit that rose 35% as subscribers increased by 21%. Revenue rose to $326.2 million from $305.3 million, an increase of 7%.

In much the same way it upended online distribution of music, Apple may now be poised to redefine the way movies are rented online. According to published reports, Apple (AAPL) and Fox (NWS) plan to bring movie rentals to Apple's popular iTunes Store, and through that to its family of iPod media players and the iPhone.
