Stocks Getting a Boost as Speculators Await Greek Resolution

Global equity markets are up sharply after reports that the Greek sovereign debt problems will be resolved shortly. Stock investors are driving up indices as confidence is being restored to the markets. Bargain hunters are also stepping in to take advantage of lower priced equities.

Last night, the Dow closed under 10,000 for the first time since November 2009. Some read this as a bearish sign while other saw this as a chance to gobble up cheap stock. For days, the major indices had been trading as if waiting for a catalyst. The developing story out of the Euro Region could be the catalyst which drives these indices sharply higher today.

Treasury futures could be under pressure today. Demand for higher risk assets could lead to liquidation of safety plays put on by nervous investors the past few days. Additional pressure could be coming from the increase in supply from the upcoming Treasury auction. One sign of impending weakness is the penetration of a support level at 118’24.

Dollar Falling as Traders Bet on Greek Rescue

The U.S. Dollar is under pressure overnight as traders are liquidating long positions on the prospect of that a deal to rescue Greece from its sovereign debt problem is being worked out in Brussels. Speculation is rising that some kind of “bailout” package is being created which would help shore up the Greek budget and help restore confidence in the Euro Region.

In a scene out of the movie “Wall Street”, the travel habits of ECB President Trichet are being tracked as if they are an indication of an impending deal. It has been reported that Trichet cut back a trip to Australia to attend a European Union meeting in Brussels. The market is reading this as a sign that negotiations have reached a critical point and that an announcement of a plan to back Greece and perhaps other struggling nations is ready to be revealed.

Appetite for risk is being renewed as investors are gaining more confidence that Greece’s fiscal problems will be resolved and the threat to the global economic recovery will be diminished. Both commodities and stocks are on the rise, taking with them commodity-linked currencies such as the Canadian and Australian Dollars.

Indian economy 'to grow 7.2%' as manufacturing expands

India has said its economy is set to grow by 7.2% in the year to the end of March, raising the chance that state support could soon be withdrawn.Government stimulus measures helped to maintain strong growth during the global downturn, but attention is now turning towards cooling rising prices. Some now expect the government to raise interest rates earlier than expected.
Strong growth in manufacturing in India is helping to compensate for falling agricultural output.
"These numbers mean that the government will have to consider exiting from the fiscal stimulus in the budget," said Rajiv Kumar at Delhi-based think-tank ICRIER.

Why Are College Students Dropping Their Business Major? We Give You the Stats

Ironically, while the economy is in the tank, statistics reveal that the percentage of college freshmen who plan to major in business is at its lowest level since the mid-1970s. According to the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at the University of California at Los Angeles, the number of freshmen who plan to major in business fell from 16.8 percent in 2008 to 14.4 percent in 2009, the lowest percentage since 1974, when 14 percent of college freshmen focused on business majors. Why are students dropping business majors?

College choice in general, according to the HERI survey, continues to be influenced by the economy. Last year saw all-time highs in the importance of cost and financial aid, and those trends continue this year, breaking all such records. According to the survey:

Find new small car quotes online.

Buy A Cheap And New Car At The Lowest Cost
It is noted that people value their cars the most, followed after their homes. For some, it is a status symbol. A car reflects your personality and also shows your financial capability. Now it is easy for you to find a new car cheap.
Click here to find the cheapest new car
•	The first and easiest way to find a cheap car is to look for discounts and cash back offers. Since the economy is recovering from a slump, it is hitting the automobile industry harder than others, and this is why most car manufacturers are offering huge discounts and incentives to people for buying their cars. You can find new cheap car on which rebates are offered, like the Mercedes-Benz CLK class which has a cash back offer of $13000 on it.
•	Another way to buy a new car is to look for models from the last year. Car manufacturers are really motivated to sell these models and hence great deals are offered on them.
Save money
If you are looking at the cheapest new car sale, you can consider buying a car with the lease option. You can save around 30 to 60 percent of the original car value, if you buy it on lease. This way you can drive a new car, yet pay less. If you are happy with the lease terms, then these are great options. A lease is for 6 months, 30,000 miles and some amount that is to be paid as down payment. Moreover, you have to show collision insurance on the automobile and not just liability insurance.
If you live near a city or a big college campus, then this might be the best option for you to live freely. You can get a car from an advertising firm straightaway, if you want to save money, and they will turn your car in to a mobile billboard. The second option is to get a stipend for driving your car with the company’s advertisement. You can always get new small car, if you buy cars with incentives of models from the last year.
Click here to buy cheap new cars

Free Graham NCAV Spreadsheet

Of the free stock spreadsheets that I offer, the net net spreadsheet has been downloaded hundreds of times and is a favorite among many people because of its ease of use. All you have to do is enter a single ticker and that’s it. Just make sure the numbers are up to date by verifying with the latest filings from the SEC.

Since the initial version, I’ve gotten some more experience with building spreadsheets since then so I’ve cleaned it up a little on the back end to support future variations I have planned for the premium stock value spreadsheets.

The main change to the spreadsheet is the addition of NCAV (Net Current Asset Value) and a data tab where most of the relevant information is stored in case you want to expand on the spreadsheet yourself.

Have Investors Turned Off The Switch To The Utilities ETF?

“While the utilities sector joined the rest of the market in its rebound from the March 2009 lows, it would seem that someone flipped the group’s rally switch to the “off” position. Since peaking in mid-December 2009, the Select Sector Utilities SPDR (XLU) has fallen more than 8%, dipping below prior support at its 10-week and 20-week moving averages in the process. The ETF has now closed its third consecutive week below these formerly supportive trend lines. What’s more, the (XLU) has underperformed the struggling S&P 500 index (SPX) by about 4% during the previous 40 trading days,” Joseph Hargett Reports From Forbes.

Hargett continues to say, “One of the utilities stocks most vulnerable to a rollover in the sector is Allegheny Energy Inc. (AYE) (nyse: AYE). Compared to its peers in the (XLU), the stock stands out as an underperformer. During the past 52 weeks AYE has shed nearly 40% of its value, compared to the XLU’s modest gain of nearly 1% for the same time frame. The equity’s decline has its beginnings in late December 2007, and it seems that AYE has largely ignored the market’s recovery since the March bottom

Where Will The Gold ETF Bottom In This Corrective Cycle?

“Around two months ago I advised my partners to look for gold to drop to the 1040-1070 area in U.S. dollars. This followed my projection in early August of a gold rally from 900 to 1250 before the next top, and I was close as we hit $1,225 and rolled over. This correction so far in gold is normal in a bull market, and is intended to knock everyone off the back of the bull. The bull likes to make sure as few people as possible are along for the ride,” David Banister Reports From StockHouse.

Banister continues to say, “Currently we are seeing a strong counter-trend rally up in the U.S. dollar. Investor’s should keep in mind that the dollar index is simply a mathematical calculation against a basket of other currencies. In this case, 57% of that formula is the Euro. The Euro has had a dramatic correction and is likely to continue to drop due to problems in Greece and other countries. This makes the dollar look better on a relative basis, but investors should remember this is largely cosmetic. Deficits continue to balloon, debt ceilings are raised, and the U.S. Treasury has to rollover a significant amount of Treasury Bonds this calendar year. Traders and investors over-react to the rallying dollar and start selling off gold and silver as fast as they can. However, at some near-term point, gold is likely to firm up and bottom regardless of the dollar rally. There has been no fundamental shift in the U.S. dollar or its merits in my opinion, and in fact, the recent economic events are only making gold look more attractive relative to other world currencies. This pullback is required to work off the excessive optimist we saw in early December.”
