AMD Cuts 10% Workforce

In the latest sign that the tech sector in general and Silicon Valley in particular is feeling the pinch of reduced spending and an overall slowdown, yet another big employer slashed its workforce. The New York Times reports that Advanced Micro Devices said it would cut about 1,650 workers.

In the last few weeks, companies like Dell, Google, Chrysler (IT workforce), eBay and Yahoo have announced layoffs of thousands of workers combined.

To be fair, Google is

To be fair, Google is cutting jobs as a result of the merger and EBay is only cutting 125 employees also as part of a restructuring and streamlining of operations. These don't have as much to do with macroeconomic problems as the other layoffs.

You're partly right in that

You're partly right in that it's not Google per se, but Doubleclick which is getting the job cuts, and since Google just got the green light for the acquisition, it's natural that they might want to 'restructure'. But look at it from a wide angle, and mergers, aquisitions and buyouts like what's happening at Bear Stearns, Yahoo and other companies on the block, and you'll see that it's not all just streamlining. There's a lot of 'forced' downsizing which is mostly beacuse of a bad economy. Also, if you read the full article, you'll see that the focus, including at Google, is on converting permanent employees into contractors - That's a macroeconomic problem.
