At Least One Clearing Firm Banning Leveraged ETFs

At least one major clearing firm this morning has sent notice it will no longer allow buying of Direxion's 3x leveraged ETFs to be purchased on margin (they didn't name Direxion explicitly, but theirs are the only ones on the market currently and were, not coincidentally, the ones specifically mentioned as being restricted in this way...

While interest in the new round of ETFs has so far been limited, I predict at least one of the triple ETF pairs has a bright future. There has been a lot of discussion lately regarding the surge in volatile late-day trading that has occurred since the summer sell-off and fall credit-crisis began to unfold. In November alone, an average of 26.2 percent of trading volume in S&P 500 stocks took place in the final hour of trading, with 17.1 percent of the trading occurring in the final 30 minutes (see WSJ article).
