The media has spun Warren Buffett's buy of Burlington Northern as positive. I consider the controversial possible macro-economic bets Buffett is really making.

Buffett has been very much in the public eye over the last few years, is this a good thing for investors though?

I recently managed to get a hold of the letters of the original Buffett Partnership. In those letters Warren Buffett describes the investment strategies employed by the partnership, the structure of the partnership as well as the fees that the limited investors paid for performance.

Historically a portfolio of stocks mimicking his flagship company Berkshire Hathaway’s portfolio holdings would have outperformed the markets. In addition to that Berkshire Hathaway A shares have delivered an annualized total return of 25% since 1976. This year the stock is down 15%. If history is any guide however, Berkshire will bounce back and reward patient investors handsomely.
